Hi astronauts, are you bored of being in the same environment everyday? do you miss the earth? are you tired of the unattractive lights that you have around? We introduce you to Fractalight. Fractalight will improve your everyday life in the ISS bringing the earth to the space and providing you the feeling of being invaded by nature. Fractalight is not a lamp, it is a whole lighting system spread around the ISS made by lighting fabrics and composed by several modules with different dimensions and shapes that can be manually modified in order to create different patterns and fit better all the corners of the ISS. Fractalight is connected by Li-Fi to the astronauts schedules and thanks to the bracelet they wear, which is connected to the whole lighting system, Fractalight can detect what person is around and modify the light according to the activity he/she is doing in order to enhance the experience. The astronaut can also manually take control of the color and intensity of the light using the bracelet as a controller. The lighting system can also focus the light in an area of the room and even show that there is something wrong going in the ISS. Furthermore the Fractalight guides the astronauts inside the ISS in order to make their lives easier. Since it is connected to their schedules, Fractalight will lit the modules to show the astronaut the way to go from their current position to the next part of the ISS where they have to do the next task. We believe that Fractalight can provide a totally new experience to astronauts changing the environment and reminding them the amazing nature we have in our planet.

Key Points Taken Into Consideration based on User Research and Available R&D Data

1. Provide to astronauts different scenarios through the lights and shadows→ country side, lake, seaside, forest…

2. Light to change emotions, underline a room, enhance behaviors, new gestures…

3. Play with colors

4. Objects as companions in the journey

5. Materials are tools to solve problems.

6. In the morning the body need a blue light and the afternoon a warm one because of circadian rhythm.

7. “When you design a lamp you design a shadow”.

8. Light can change the perception of the environment and volume.

9. Astronauts during 24h they see 16 sunsets and sunrises→ Focus in circadian rhythm.

10. Differentiate light from when they are working/sleeping/enjoying their free time. Maybe they have different schedules and they aren’t working at the same time.

11. There’s no top and bottom→ take advantage from that?

12. Power of SPACE language→ GESTURES

Key Points Based on the In-Depth Client Research

1. Light creates the shape

2. Play with shapes to create different lighting environment

3. Mix of function and decoration

4. Simple gestures

5. Simplicity

6. Light is treated as an entity - products define the character of light

7. Mix of Italian traditional design and the contributing/outsider designer’s own value and view-points

8. Eclectic visuals of designs (aesthetics)

wide variety of design - almost no constraints

9. Distinctive expressions in design language - due to artistic approach

10. Decoration and creation of feelings through the lamp structure.

11. Creation of light / lamps (technical and decorative) according to the environment (in context with the Geography)

12. ‘Classic Design’ approach in terms of creation
